Privatisation of generators defeated in Parliament
Power privatisation is dead and buried after legislation to privatise electricity generators was defeated in State Parliament in September.
Local campaigners have fought hard to Stop the Sell Off, successfully lobbying politicians, and raising awareness that power privatisation would lead to higher prices and fewer local jobs.
The campaign has been a huge success thanks to the help of Stop the Sell Off supporters who have been talking to MPs, holding public meetings and collecting signatures.
The NSW Government’s plan was overwhelmingly opposed by more than 85 per cent of the NSW public.
The blocking of the sale in Parliament echoed the community’s disapproval with the legislation, which would have resulted in increased electricity prices, unreliable services and fewer local jobs for NSW.
Local campaigners worked hard to Stop The Sell Off and their efforts helped stop the privatisation legislation going through.
Morris Iemma bows out
The Government’s decision to privatise power was given a major setback following the resignation of Premier Morris Iemma and Treasurer Michael Costa.
Iemma and Costa had been instrumental in developing the privatisation legislation, and its defeat in parliament led both MPs to call it quits.
The success of the Stop the Sell Off campaign helped raise public awareness of the dangers of power privatisation, which would have led to higher prices, less reliable services and fewer local jobs.
New Premier Nathan Rees has indicated the government is still looking into the sale of retail assets, however no details have been released on the plan.
Stop the Sell Off campaigners broadly opposes any action by the government that involves privatisation, condemning any action to privatise the state’s energy retailers.
